Passing through the crowd my heart skipped a beat as I moved towards the painting known as Starry Night. Every twinkling light, swirl, and brushstroke not only screamed Van Gogh but spoke to my soul. It was perfectly imperfect being smaller than anticipated with unpainted edges. These little imperfections humanizing the work also magnifying the emotional aspect of the painting. From that moment on I became inspired to make my urban landscape based on the hustle and bustle of New York. Using the same line rubric as Van Gogh, ink, and pastels I made NYC Rhythmic Twilight, my vision of the urban city.
NYC Rhythmic Twilight was inspired by the emotions I experienced observing Starry Night. The energy of New York was different than the energy seen overlooking the town of Saint-Remy in Starry Night. The energy of New York was more structured and rhythmic yet calm. The best way to experience what I felt is to listen to the song Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. As the flutes begin and the horns chime signifying twilight before the city awakens. The serene energy of twilight in New York is what I strived to capture because of its meditative state.
